WTO History Project The protests against the World Trade Organization that rocked Seattle, Washington in late 1999 were an incredibly significant moment in the history of popular protests. World Trade Organization Protests in Seattle In January 1999, the City of Seattle was selected to host the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference in November-December 1999. The WTO is a global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. Those protests were often against key institutions of globalization, such as the G8, World Bank, IMF and the World Trade Organization. At the time, as large as some of the protests may have been, they were typically met with hostility from the intellectual establishment and mainstream media, typically from the West which was generally benefiting from the corporate-oriented globalization it was controlling and shaping.

More than 500,000 Indians demonstrated against the WTO's predecessor, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and the agenda of powerful groups such as the Movimento Sem Terra (the Landless) in Brazil and the Zapatistas in Mexico are beginning to forge a new global ideology of resistance to corporate expansion. When Seattle elected officials and civic leaders won the bid to host the Third Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO), they hoped to link Seattle's name to a new round of negotiations aimed at promoting and regulating international trade.
